I am guessing that you clicked on this post because you are looking to start a blog? I am to assume that you have seen the term “blogging” / “blogger” being thrown around on the internet and you want to get in on the action. Hopefully I can help you out with that.
Let’s start with basic’s..
What is a blog in our day and age?
Blogging is basically a website where you can customise and upload whatever you want. A blog is different from a website as it normally displays the most recently post at the top (sort of like a journal) and it is updated very regularly. The term blog stems from online diary entries being uploaded to a blog in the 90’s. Now, the term blogging has evolved and even though it is sometimes easier to describe it as a website, they still remain different (but similar) You can post anything from pictures to poems to reviews and you dont have to be an expert in these fields. A blogger is someone who blogs.
Why do people blog?
A lot of people who don’t blog, won’t know that there is actually a whole community of bloggers. It is such an amazing way to find people with the same interests as you and to build online friendships. I have some amazing friends online and I know that I could always drop them a message and they would love to talk. These people understand the same things as you when it comes to blogging, because you both do it. It’s like having a best friend that blogs. It is such a good way to express your creativity. If you are really into photography then this would be perfect for you, so you can share your work. People also blog to make money, you can earn amazing money from blogging and if it is a strong passion of yours then why the hell not?
What can you blog about?
ANYTHING IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD. I can guarantee you that there is a blog for everything. Travel, lifestyle, fashion, food, mental health, photography, parenting, business, technology, reviews, finance, instructional, health and fitness, entertainment.. the list is endless.
“A lot of people who don’t blog, won’t know that there is actually a whole community of bloggers. It is such an amazing way to find people with the same interests as you and to build online friendships.”
Step one –
It is so important to really sit down and think about what you want to blog about. What are your interests? You can blog about anything in the whole entire world so if you think about what your interests are, for example..animals? you can definitely create a blog all about animals. You just have to be passionate about something so much where you enjoy writing about it.
Even if this means sitting down and brainstorming what you love to talk / write about. You can blog about lots of different subjects (which probably 90% of bloggers probably do), e.g.. animals, books and food. At this stage try to get a rough idea of what you would want your blog to be called, this will be useful later.
You need to find a web hosting ( this is basically a service that will hold your blog on the internet ) it is important to find a good host. My personal favourite is WordPress. They are fab and I think most of the population of bloggers, blog with WordPress. It is so simple and easy to use. I have tried blogging with Blogger and NOPE it wasn’t for me at all. You need to look around and find what one you want to use. All of these different services do things differently, they all have different plans for hosting your blog, different ways of customising your blog and even the main dashboard for you blog will be different.
You could sign up to a couple of different blog hosting services and see what one you think you will get on with the most.
When just starting out I would 100% recommend on joining up to a hosting service instead of going straight to self hosted. ( What is self hosted?<< click here.) Just because it could be a waste of time especially if you decide later that you don’t want to blog anymore and it isn’t for you. I would also recommend on using the FREE PLAN with whatever service you are using. You do not want to pay money, to then decide a couple of months later you don’t want to blog anymore. you will have waisted money. Wait until you are really committed to your blog before deciding to spend any money on anything blog related.
You now need to think of a domain name. This will be your blog name. This can be anything in the world and I don’t think you can change it once you have done it, so make sure it is a good one (I could be wrong, maybe you can change it) I would recommend something memorable, short and sweet. Having something like sophiawholikestoblogdaily.wordpress.com IS TOOOO long. Whereas having something like Sophiaaaxo.wordpress.co.uk is perfect!
I think this step is the most exciting as this is where you can customise your website and make it exactly how you want it to look. Once you have finished customising then you are ready to show the world your blog and upload your first blog post!
So now you have done that, you might be sitting there thinking..”what do I write my first post on?”
I have got you covered 🙂
