Accepting that not everyone will like you and that’s ok!

“Be yourself. People don’t have to like you, and you don’t have to care.” – unknown

When I was younger I was the type of girl who wanted to be friends with everyone. Even in school, which seems like such a long time ago now, I was friends with everyone from every friendship group. I wanted to be liked by everyone.. people who were in different classes to me, people who I had on social media and even people who passed me in the corridors. I really liked the idea of having a lot of friends and being liked by a lot of people and just meeting new people. It wasn’t actually until I left school and went to university that I realised that you can’t be friends with everyone. Not only is it literally impossible, but everyone is different and you won’t always get on with everyone.

Going to university made me realise a lot and allowed me to reflect on this ‘wanting to be liked by everyone’ mentality. Attending university meant that I would be around a lot of people, which means different personalities, different religions, different views and opinions, different everything..There were times, especially in the subject I studied (drama and theatre) where you clash with people because of difference in opinion, and just because everyone is different. This made me realise that not everyone is going to like me and I’m not going to like everyone and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Each individual person is different from the next, no two people are the same. Even if you see two people who are inseparable and are almighty besties, they are in some way different from each other. There are many differences between us all which means that sometimes we might clash with people, but this allows you to see the type of people you want to be friends with and the type that you don’t.

I came to the idea that, clashing with people isn’t bad right? we wouldn’t all want to be the same because the world would be boring. We wouldn’t learn anything from one another and we wouldn’t meet anyone new, because we would all be the same. I remember in my first year at University, I clashed really bad with this girl in my class who I had to work with. We were COMPLETELY different people, came from different backgrounds, she has different levels of morals and respect to me and there was no way that we were ever going to get on. Clashing with someone isn’t bad, it just means that you both as individuals stand up for what you believe in and can voice your opinions.

“To be happy, we must not be too concerned with others”

In every environment there are going to be people that you won’t necessarily like or people that might not like you and that is ok. Even since I have become a blogger, I put my life online and there are some people that don’t necessarily like that. Or some people that think because I blog and earn money from it that it isn’t a proper career. There is always going to be someone who has a problem with something you are doing, so why care? Not everyone is going to like the way I write my blog posts, not everyone is going to like my Instagram, not everyone is going to like my personality, not everyone is going to like how I dress..not everyone is going to understand the way I live my life and I am perfectly fine with that.

You don’t need to live for the approval of others as it is a waste of time and you are your own person.

I completly agree with this, a lot of the time if I don’t like someone or if they don’t like me it’s not that we have a problem with each other, it’s that we’ve nothing in common and our personalities don’t mesh well together. In those instances, I’ll always be nice, but I’m not gonna be getting coffee with them!

Yeah exactly and sometimes people just don’t click, you don’t have to be rude to each other though. Yeah I know what you mean lol

100% agree! I used to think I wasn’t the girl, who wanted everyone’s attention but until I got with my partner, I was! He taught me how to love myself, and how I don’t need all the toxicity in my life to feel “included”!

Thats so lovely though that he made you love yourself. You just have to live your life for you and don’t care about others!

Great post! I think this is something that comes with getting older. You realize not everyone can get along. Personalities may clash and that’s OK. It’s just about being confident in yourself and knowing who you are.

Thank you so much! I agree, when you are younger you don’t really think about the bigger picture. Yes 100%, confidence is key!

I actually used to be the same way! I used to want everyone to like me, and while now I don’t want people to particularly dislike me, I know that there are just people that you just don’t click with and it’s okay! Great post Sophia xx

Yeah I know what you mean, obviously no one wants to be disliked but there are some people out there that will have a problem with you for no reason. Thank you girl! xx
